NoriMT

Trados Studio plugin

Connect Trados Studio to NoriMT as an MT provider.

Prerequisites

What you need before installing the plugin.

  • Trados Studio 2024 (Studio18). Studio 2021 and 2022 are not supported — the plugin is for Studio 18 only.
  • Windows 10 or 11.
  • An internet connection from the computer running Trados Studio to the address where you open NoriMT in your browser. The plugin sends segments for translation to that address.
  • A NoriMT account and an API key from Connectivity. Keys can be created by the workspace owner or an admin. If you're a member of an organization without those rights, ask an admin to give you a key.

Installation

For translators using the .sdlplugin package.

  1. Download NovaTranslate.TradosProvider.sdlplugin with the Download .sdlplugin button in the app (Connectivity → Plugin guide).
  2. Close Trados Studio if it's running.
  3. Double-click the .sdlplugin file → Install in the RWS Plugin Installer.
  4. Open Trados Studio 2024 and check that the plugin is installed and enabled, in either of two ways:
    • Add-Ins → RWS AppStore → Installed Plugins — Nova Translate should be in the list.
    • Add-Ins → Plugins — find NovaTranslate.TradosProvider and check that its enable box is ticked.

In Trados the plugin is still called Nova Translate for now — it's the NoriMT plugin.

Have Studio 2021 and 2024 on the same computer? Double-clicking sometimes opens Studio 2021 instead of the installer. If nothing happens, right-click the .sdlplugin file → Open with → browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\Trados\Trados Studio\Studio18\Sdl.Desktop.PluginInstaller.exe.

Uninstalling

How to remove the plugin from Trados Studio 2024.

The standard way (after installing by double-clicking)

  1. In Trados Studio, open Add-Ins → RWS AppStore → Installed Plugins.
  2. Find Nova Translate → click the three dots on the right → Uninstall.
  3. Restart Studio — the plugin is removed.

If Uninstall does nothing (old manually copied versions)

Trados can't uninstall plugins that were copied in by hand earlier (without double-clicking). Clear out every copy once with the uninstaller, then reinstall by double-clicking — after that the standard Uninstall works as normal.

  1. Close Trados Studio completely.
  2. Download and run the Studio 2024 uninstaller (.cmd) — it deletes the plugin from all three Studio 18 locations.
  3. Reinstall by double-clicking the .sdlplugin file (see Installation).
  4. From then on, Add-Ins → RWS AppStore → Installed Plugins → the three dots → Uninstall works as normal.

The script is downloaded from the app: Connectivity → Plugin guide.

Setting up a project

Connect the plugin to your workspace.

  1. In NoriMT, open Connectivity and generate an API key. Copy it.
  2. In Trados Studio, open (or create) a project, then go to Project Settings → Language Pairs → All Language Pairs → Translation Memory and Automated Translation.
  3. Click Use → Nova Translate. The Nova Translate — Connection dialog opens.
  4. Fill in the settings. The field and button names below are exactly as they appear in the dialog:
    • Endpoint URL — the base URL of your NoriMT installation, e.g. https://norimt.example.com (no trailing slash).
    • API key — the API key you copied from Connectivity.
    • Test connection — checks the address and the key. On success, ✓ Connected successfully. appears on the right.
    • Default template (optional) — pick a template straight from the drop-down. The template applies its linked prompt and glossary to every segment automatically. Leave (no template) to translate without extra context. If the list is empty or you don't see a new template, click ↻ Reload templates below it.
  5. Click Save. Open a segment, press Ctrl+Enter (Confirm) and Trados fills the target with the translation from NoriMT.

The translation engine (Google Translate, DeepL, OpenAI GPT, Anthropic Claude or Google Gemini) is chosen in the Nova Translate panel at the bottom of the editor — the Engine field. You can also switch templates there without reopening the settings. The engine needs an API key configured under Connectivity → Engine API keys.

Tip: Create and refine templates (prompt + glossary + engine) under Templates and Prompts, then pick them from the drop-down in the plugin settings (or in the Nova Translate panel in the editor) and click Save. If a new template doesn't show up, click ↻ Reload templates.

Troubleshooting

Common symptoms and their causes.

SymptomLikely cause
Uninstalling via Add-Ins → RWS AppStore → … → Uninstall does nothingThe plugin was copied in by hand earlier, so Trados doesn't know how to uninstall it. Download the Studio 2024 uninstaller from the top corner, clear out every copy, then reinstall by double-clicking. After that the built-in Uninstall works. See Uninstalling.
The installer doesn't list Studio 2024 (Studio 2021 is installed too)A wrong Windows file association — double-clicking opens Studio 2021 instead of the RWS Plugin Installer. Right-click the .sdlplugin file → Open with → choose Sdl.Desktop.PluginInstaller.exe from the Studio18 folder (see Installation).
After Save/OK: “The translation provider Nova Translate could not be opened and was disabled”Usually version 0.3.0.0 — the package is missing Newtonsoft.Json.dll. Download and install the latest version with the Download .sdlplugin button, then check under Add-Ins → RWS AppStore → Installed Plugins.
“Nova Translate” doesn't appear in the list of providersThe .sdlplugin isn't installed, or it's installed for the wrong version of Studio.
“Nova Translate endpoint is not configured”The Endpoint URL is empty in the provider settings.
401 errors in Studio's status barThe API key is wrong, has expired, or wasn't created in the app.
503 with “engine not configured”No API key is set for the selected engine. Go to Connectivity → Engine API keys and add it.
5xx errorsThe endpoint can't be reached or the engine returned an error. Check Connectivity → Recent requests — every request is logged.
The Default template drop-down is emptyEnter the Endpoint URL and API key first, click Test connection, then ↻ Reload templates. Check that the key is valid under Connectivity.
Segments are translated without a prompt or glossaryThe selected template has no linked prompt. Open Templates, edit the template and link a prompt and a glossary.

Security notes

What to keep in mind when sharing project packages.

The API key is stored in the Trados provider settings. Don't share .sdlproj packages with third parties — they may contain the key. A future version will move the key to Trados's secure storage.

API keys can be revoked at any time under Connectivity. Revoke a key straight away if you think it has been compromised.
